This waterfront project on Sydney Harbour takes on the challenge of restoring and respecting the intricate detail of a local heritage item, as well as adding a contemporary element that elevates it beyond even its original grandeur; to create, once again, a grand family home.

The form of the new pavilion addition is deliberately in opposition to the original home, its minimal crescent shape opening to the surrounding landscape. With a strategically light connection between the two buildings, the old and new are connected with minimal interruption to the existing footprint and plentiful opportunities for courtyards and light wells. It offers kitchen, living, and dining spaces, lightening the burden on the heritage home, while its sweeping arrangement defends against privacy concerns relating to the neighbouring apartment building.

At the heart of the concept is, of course, maintaining the expansive relationship to the water enjoyed by the spectacular site.
