New Project: Jacob's House

A special opportunity to work on an award-winning heritage home

Carter Williamson is excited to announce a unique new project, Jacob's House on Darramuragal and Darug Country.

Originally designed by Russell Jack, this home won the Wilkinson Award for Outstanding Architectural Merit in 1963, a recognition of residential excellence in New South Wales.

Commissioned for former NSW Supreme Court judge Sir Kenneth Jacobs, Jacobs House was drafted with considered simplicity in mind.

We are working to respect and maintain the home's notable contextual and heritage underpinnings as we revitalise aspects of the property for contemporary living. Expanding the pavilion will create new relationships with existing courtyards and gardens, and modernising the kitchen will provide a sense of renewed energy to the warm, structured home. Architect Matt Devine is a collaborator on this project, working as our heritage consultant to acknowledge the unique architectural history of the Jacob's House throughout our design process.

‘The attainment of a restful background for day-to-day living was the governing factor behind the concept of the house’[1].

With sandstone brickwork, red terracotta floor tiles and dark stained timber joinery, the exposed posts and beams provide the home a calming framework with sophisticated restraint. The property was shot in 1964 by Max Dupain OBE, one of Australia’s most respected and influential 20th century photographers. A proponent of modernism and specialist in architectural photography, Dupain documented notable and award-winning homes and buildings in his signature black and white visual style.

We are thoroughly enjoying working on this project and look forward to sharing more with you as the development progresses.
